riding bareback

Sunday, I rode BigT bareback for the first time! Wow!

Well, before you get too excited about it, it was in the roundpen and hubby was leading him… so it was more like a pony ride… just aREALLY BIG pony that was 16.2 hands! Boy, he is TALL… and I was very aware of it when I was on him bareback. The ground seemed to be a long way down…

We took the spare water tank and flipped it over to make a platform in the roundpen which I could use to mount LadyZ. I wanted to be at a height that would allow me to just reach over with a leg and drop gentle onto her back. The mounting block was just a tad too short for that easy drop down (I would have had to jump up on her).

BigT wanted to come in and check it all out so I thought what the heck.. why not get on him, which may relieve my anxiety a bit about getting on bareback on LadyZ? Getting on him three times and just walking about did ease that anxiety a lot. I’ll probably continue to mess around with him bareback to build that confidence.

With LadyZ, I had brought a shorter sorting stick and used it as my target. This came in real handy during the pre-mounting exercise as I could manuveur it about and she could touch it and get rewarded.

What I found is touching the target kept her mind busy and she eased off on being so overly aggravated about me touching and putting pressure on her back.

We are getting really close to mounting! Unfortunately, rain and colder temps are expected all this week which is a bit of a bummer.
