I’ve put the word out, looking for a retirement home for the Big Guy. So far the two responses I’ve received are not promising.
The cost would be more then what I’m paying for now – actually far more – and would be the same as full care board. The logic isn’t logical. It would cost me 3-4x to move Big Guy to another location to “retire” with people I can’t keep an eye upon, compared to keeping him with me for far less.
I’ve still got a message out to my vet who sits on a board for therapeutic riding and to a retired Thoroughbred association in the state.
BigT isn’t completely unsound and I want him to be used and enjoyed, where he can receive attention and affection. Being a therapeutic horse *might* work though I have some doubts as I know he doesn’t like being ridden by actual riding lesson students but being a therapy horse he would do no more then walk about.
OTOH, it may just come down to it that I remain the best home for him.
It is hard to find a good place to retire a horse. Plus there are people out there who think that, if we have a horse, we must have money to burn. I hope that you find a good solution. However you may be happier keeping him with you in retirement. There will be less to worry about.
Yes, it seems it might be best to keep him with me. I am talking with the retired Thoroughbred association for the state and she may have a possibility for me. It would be about the same as what I am paying now but he would be stabled with seniors.
If we owned our own place this wouldn’t be a problem… but as it is we don’t and I don’t foresee that happening in the near future. 😦
